There is a funked up version of the nursery rhyme “Old McDonald Had a Farm” on this album. But humor was just part of his personality. ![]() As the on-point review from Colin McGuire notes below, Rufus Thomas got sort of pigeon-holed as a novelty-song guy in their stable and never really got his due. ![]() This is also his best long-player for Stax. Rufus had mostly been a singles artist for Stax, and I believe this was only his second long-player for them (the previous one, some eight years earlier, had followed the success of his classic “Walking The Dog”). There weren’t too many people who could almost steal a show from Isaac Hayes in the early 70s, but Rufus Thomas almost accomplished that feat at the famous Wattstax festival,w with his rendition of the title track from this album (see below for a great clip).
